ABOUT HEADSTAND
Headstand wallpaper designs grew out of a long term collaboration between the Marigold beadwork co-operative in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and Bulawayo-born South African artist Joni Brenner. The wallpaper designs are based on Liz Whitter’s precision photographs of their signature hand-loomed beaded necklaces widely varied in pattern and colour.
In 2020, facing the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on vulnerable artist-led enterprises, Whitter and Brenner formed Headstand (the world upside down/finding a new perspective/holding balance/taking a risk ) and created a range of wallpapers reflecting the beadwork: zany, quirky, kaleidoscopic but also controlled, formal, geometric. Whereas the time-consuming beadwork production remains small, the wallpapers can be produced at scale, forming statement walls that prompt thought about creativity and individuality, the richness of sustained practices, of crafted design and the people and communities involved in the processes.
In 2017, photographer Liz Whitter documented the co‑operative for the book Making Marigold: Beaders of Bulawayo. It was launched at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York with the support of Alissa LaGamma, the Ceil and Michael E. Pulitzer Curator of the Department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas.
